Obama bans earmarks from economic package

If he can make the congress accountable for their usual misconduct, good for him.  We need to watch congress closely, he better be careful he could be making powerful enemies from both party's.  

What worries me is this: What is being "reported" as accountable? Will we get half truths and veiled information?  I think its a marvelous idea, but how much actual accountability will be revealed, reported and tracked after all that has been done to the American people in this stage of the "game"?  Are the American people ready to ask honest, gut wretching, brutal questions when needed? Or will we continue to shake our fists and then shake in our boots when confronted?

Hear, Hear, Lets do this right for a change!

A parent can scold and yell and threaten, but if there is NO follow-through the behavior can't be corrected. That's exactly what is happening and has happened in our government. There are no teeth to the laws of our country. The fraud, deceit, theft, and manipulation will continue no matter who is guiding the ship.

I wish Mr. Obama all the best, but also need him to know that all the words thrown at him don't mean a thing. Don't just talk - ACT!

You're right, Spud, the info to be given on the internet is just that: information.  Congress will actually vote on the result, not us.  While this setup will give no more power to influence this issue than usual, it does give us a chance to see who does what and take note when re-election time comes around.  Hopefully enough voters will accept the responsibility to keep track of their elected representatives' actions and not be swayed by BS ads in the next campaign season.

How are we going to know what they post on the Internet is the truth? Trust them that it is?

Oh no, a company taking care of its employees, how dare they!  What you've said is the reason that Halliburton is named one of the top companies in the world to work for, if you seriously want to call protecting their employees a negative then you've got some serious problems.  Oh, and the soldiers not having proper protective vests was a problem with the Clinton administration in Iraq, when Bush declared war the title provided the additional funding which more than doubled the level of protective equipment provided, which is one of the main reasons war is declared now in the first place, as the troops are generally already there fighting long before the title is provided (I served in the Clinton administration when our pay and benefits were cut by 30%, tens of thousands of us entirely without body armor of any kind, losing three friends in Iraq during that time).  For the record, the comments towards the companies working out there while we were serving in the military was mostly made out of jealousy and/or respect for the level that they were taking care of their people.  Properly maintained humvees, proper levels of protection, above average salaries...in the real world we call all of those strong positives.  We wanted the same treatment, it's the treatment that was deserved, which is why many of us when our duty ended went off to work for those companies.

But one problem is always going to be that one persons pork is anothers necessity.  Sure, a museum or telescope are easy targets to identify.  But, new roads, schools, military bases, fishery funds etc in any one state can be "pork" to someone who does not live there.

Haven't seen the entire stimulus package, but the museum is discussed above, and REid was planning to get Fed funds to help build. We'll see how it works out.

Actually, we can't give him a chance because he hasn't provided a single policy that should be given a chance.  Why give a chance to something that even common sense tells you will only hurt us in the long run?  Your insult is already a very tired one that doesn't fit in reality.  If Obama's policies actually made sense (versus claiming that taking from the job creators will magically create jobs instead of end them), then he would be supported by more people instead of his approval rating already dropping significantly even before taking office.  You don't sit there while someone walks into your home to rob you, giving him a chance that he may change his mind.  No, you try and stop him BEFORE running off with your belongings.  McCain has nothing to do with the reasons to hate Obama, anyone who claims differently is simply looking for an excuse to explain why people feel differently.  Almost half the country didn't support Obama's ideas BEFORE McCain lost the run for office, so your comment is easily discredited.  We can't give him a chance because his policies need to be stopped BEFORE hurting all of us of every financial class, not because of someone completely unrelated who no longer has anything to do with this incoming presidency.  Grudges have nothing to do with it, his policies are stated and they are extremely harmful, period.

Compared to before, when we were paying his Senate salary while he did, ummm, nothing.  All candidates are paid while they campaign, that's the way it goes.  To use that as an insult would be insulting McCain, Palin, Clinton, and every other politician that was running, along with insulting everyone of all past elections.  The insult that makes sense is talking about paying him for his work before campaigning (as short as that time was), and paying him for the harmful policies he's attempting to screw us over with now.

I have said it before and I will say it again this is following the same path that we took in the 20's and 30's that caused the great depression.  After the stock market crash unemployment went up to the 5-7% range.  People started calling for the government to do something so the President (Cleveland?) introduced a "stimulus package" then FDR was elected and got a huge stimulus package passed (relatively speaking) and unemployment jumped to 30+% and stayed there untill we entered WWII.  That is why I am opposed to these handouts to companies.  And don't call them loans the companiew and the feds overseeing things(ha) will find a way to avoid them being paid back.  The only stimulus that makes sense is to reduce taxes on the working people who are actually paying taxes.  That will put more money in circulation which will generate more business which will result in more taxes being paid on all levels.

congress has only been in the slight majority of the dems for TWO YEARS - not several, and it was far from control, it was just a statistical majority - not a veto or filibuster proof majority.  so let's not forget the republican led congress of the 6 previous yrs - it's all who were in washington for the last 8 yrs who are to blame and then it's all our faults for electing, re-electing and then not paying attention to these crooks!

actually to be statiscally accurate, Anthony, the Dems still controlled senate until 2002 election. So they actually had control of the senate for 4 out of Bush's 8 years and the house 2 of his 8 years.

Just like the good guy doesn't wear a white hat, the good politician doesn't belong to one party or the other.  It's no longer a question on being able to find a politician that isn't guilty it's a question of who is the least guilty.  We keep running and electing the same people who continue to rip us off.  I have a hard time believing that with all the people we have in this country that we can't  elect new people to run for these positions.  Make it a law they must use public funding that way everyone has a equal opportunity.  It's so expensive to run that most people couldn't afford to run. Its the average person we need to better represent the needs of the people.  While we are at it, we need limit their terms (no more than 2). Congresspersons, senators, and the president should be sentenced for taking any gifts or funds from lobbyist.  As well as sentence the lobbyist and place sanctions against the interest they represent.  These people aren't there to become rich, they are there to represent the people.  We can't just allow these folks to simply resign from their position when they are found to have committed a crime, they need to go to jail just as any other person would have to.  These folks need to learn they are not above the law. and they are certainly not above the American people.

Besides all that, the earmark system is awful system but given that so much state/county money is taxed by the federal government is that bad that congressmen try to get some back for projects in their district?

Some of the earmarks are spent on good things, but it seems that a majority of the money is spent on things that do not contribute to the communities as a whole. Such as, $110 million for 34 projects related to renovations of golf courses, $10 million for seaside  lagoon rehabilitation, $6 million to heat a swimming pool, or $621 million for a 580,000 square foot Capitol Visitor Center. I know that people get employed to do what is needed for renovations and building, but how much money actually goes into the pockets of employees and how much goes into the pockets of the "big wigs?"

Doesnt matter to me who gets what. It up to the voters in those districts to decide if the money requested by their congressman through earmarks was for something good or a waste of money, and if it was a waste vote him or her out.

$1,000 / $500. is a nice gift, but personally, I can't spend it - I have a mortgage I can hardly afford now that my husband has been laid off, so it's really just another week of security for my home. The only purchases I make now are only absolute necessities - fuel and food.

Unless mortgage lenders are willing to extend a bit more, the economy is not going to recover in my opinion. My lender won't do anything for me because I haven't defaulted....yet.

yes we did and that same president lef tus in such a clusterf*$k that, as Obama has said, we'll have to worry about the deficit later.  But, unlike W, Obama has a plan.  He's not just going to blow the money on brand new toys for the military (when their old ones worked perfectly fine) and he won't be blowing $10billion a month in Iraq.  He will be implementing an infrastructure rebuilding movement so that this money is actually being used as an investment in our own future - imagine that. spending tax money on infrasturcture and putting it back into our economy - kind of how it's SUPPOSED to be used!  What a novel idea - invest in America and our roads, bridges, schools, and struggling taxpayers - truly he must be a crazy liberal, socialistic fascist, dictator, evil satan worshiping lunatic to come up with such an idea! 

Seriosuly...for those who just have to criticize instead of saying, hey, maybe we'll give him a shot at succeeding, I ask you this - how would YOU, as President, get our country out of this mess?????  and if you have a plan, who have you told?  Have you called your congressmen/women or tried running for office yourself or have you done anything to help your country recover, since you have all the answers????

Everybody knows that no matter what PE Obama's plans were you will have people saying how it's not going to help.  You have one person talking about a world war to fix this mess way i see it is a war is part of the reason we are in this mess how is getting into another going to help?  Other than kill more of troops.

His project IS a waste of tax payers' money on an unnecessary project.  Take from the job creators to provide a short term immediate payout to the non-creators.  And what has happened every time this has been attempted?  That's right, job loss, inflated costs, and the money disappearing shortly afterwards with us still suffering from its long term results.  I cannot believe that he believes the majority of Americans actually think this is a good idea.  It just recently failed miserably, with us still suffering from the attempt, why on earth is he trying it again?  I would love an easy grand right now, but not when it's going to cost mor than that in the long run.  We can't afford the equivalent of a loan with an unyieldy high interest rate that will bite us all in the butt.  He just made it abundantly clear to Congress that his very goal is to waste the tax payers' money on harmful projects, all disguised to fool those who don't think past the next two minutes.  That's the single worst message he should be spreading, and I am not only not proud of this disgrace, I am disgusted.

Beck-You want to know what is the real waste of taxpayer dollars?  Paying GWB's salary and all of his Texas buddies salaries while they screwed, stole and sacrificed our tax dollars, our country, our military and our country's reputation for the almighty dollar.  Now that is the real waste of taxpayer dollars.
